In conjunction with the CHNA9 Racial Justice Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) and Gardner Coalition Action Team (GCAT), LUK Inc, Mount Wachusett Community College’s Tea Time Speaker Series is pleased to host Dr. Haner Hernández, Senior Consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, for a raw and unapologetic discussion of the many systems of oppression that may contribute to the School to Prison pipeline on October 28, 2019 at the Gardner campus.

This discussion aims to inform educators and policy-makers of the systems of oppression that keep many low-income students of color marginalized in school and disenfranchised in the workforce as adults. Understanding these systems are critical when trying to understand the student, which in return will help you understand your employees.

Dr. Hernández is currently Senior Consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, with a focus on disparities, building health equity, addiction treatment, recovery supports, and the Recovery Support Centers located throughout the Commonwealth. Dr. Hernández serves as faculty at the New England School of Addiction Studies and has taught a number of undergraduate and graduate courses, and has presented at several national and state conferences. Dr. Hernández serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Board for Voluntary Certification of Drug and Alcohol Counselors, is a member of the Board of the Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery (MOAR), was appointed to the Springfield Public Health Council in 2006, and served on the Massachusetts Governor’s Latin American Advisory Commission in Massachusetts from 2000-2004.
