Instructional Objectives:

The student will develop a better understanding of the following course topics:

1. Wood surface preparation and sanding equipment

2. Finishing application equipment

3. Finishing material use and evaluation

4. Environmental compliance


Description of Course:

WPT220 Wood Sanding and Finishing is a 3-credit college undergraduate course concentrating on basic and intermediate sanding and finishing principles commonly found in the wood industry. Students in this course will learn the value of proper wood sanding, the properties of spray and non-spray finishing equipment, types of finishing materials, and environmental compliance requirements. The course will stress safety and the most current finishing technologies available to the woodworking industry. Students will learn the types of abrasives used in sanding, and their proper application. Next, the wood finishing process will be reviewed in depth, including environmental compliance requirements, types of finishes and finishing systems.

Abrasives: History, types of sandpaper, paper vs. cloth, other types of abrasives, abrasive terms, purpose, sanding defects, coated abrasives, flex, grits, backing, dust control systems, sanding machines, tools

Laws and regulations-OSHA, EPA, permitting, stacks, indoor and outdoor, storage, transportation

 

General Policies:

1.) Distance learning students in WPT 220 Wood Products Sanding and Finishing web-based course have one year to complete its requirements.

2.) Every registered student will receive a password to allow entrance into the appropriate Blackboard (Bb) site. Instructions to obtain this password will be emailed to the student upon registration.

3.) Every student is required to complete assignments as assigned. Any student is welcome to register for WPT 220 at any time during the schedule at no additional cost.

4.) The material and scheduling is subject to change without notice.

5.) Readers of Education-In-Print may take this course for college credit by contacting the instructor and registering for the course.

6.) Discussion and networking is required, expected, and encouraged on the Bb site.

 

Grading System: For WPT220, the grading consists of a letter grade equal to a numerical percentage derived from the points available (410) versus the points attained. The academic and grading policies are set by the college and may be viewed in the catalogue, available at your request.
