MOUNT WACHUSETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF DEVENS CAMPUS

(DEVENS)—Mount Wachusett Community College will celebrate the grand opening of its new Devens campus, Tues., Sept. 9, at 12:00 noon, at 100 Jackson Road.

“The college has a long history with Devens and we are very excited about this newest development,” said MWCC President Daniel M. Asquino. The college offered college courses to military personnel when Devens served as the United States Army’s New England Headquarters. Although Fort Devens closed in 1996, MWCC has maintained a presence at the site.

The new campus will not only continue to offer ABE and GED opportunities for students, but also an advanced training center offering the latest in manufacturing technology. “We applaud the employers in the region who recognize the importance of the development of their workforce,” said Asquino. “We will continue to tailor our educational and training opportunities to meet the specific needs of each of our clients.”

The new training center boasts over a million dollars worth of manufacturing and computing equipment– including an incubation space for new technology development. “This incubation space is important to businesses who need to test and/or train with new equipment, but don’t want to take valuable equipment out of production,” explained MWCC Executive Vice President Edward R. Terceiro who has been spearheading the project. In addition, the center will offer a variety of technical and non-technical courses in manufacturing, supervision, management and human resources.

The grand opening will feature remarks from President Asquino as well as MassDevelopment President and CEO Michael P. Hogan and Nypro, Inc. President Brian Jones. “The success of this center is largely due to the support from Nypro and Brian Jones,” said Asquino. “Nypro has contributed a quarter of a million dollars worth of equipment as well as valuable advice and counsel on trends in manufacturing.” Jones will also present a workshop entitled, “Lean in the Global Marketplace,” as part of the day’s events. Hogan praised the new center for the impact it will have on the region. “We expect the new center will serve as a regional job training center, which will help to fuel the economic engine that Devens is for the region. Partnering employers with all of the educational offerings of Mount Wachusett Community College is a perfect fit.”

Following the grand opening celebration, a luncheon, demonstrations and guided tours of the new campus will be conducted.
