GED GRADS CELEBRATE AT MOUNT WACHUSETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

(Gardner)—Over 350 proud spouses, parents, grand parents, children and friends enthusiastically cheered as 69 students celebrated their 2004 GED graduation at Mount Wachusett Community College, Sat., June 19 in the Theatre.

Massachusetts Department of Education GED Chief GED Examiner Tom Mechem told the graduates that their GED would advance their education and careers and give them more confidence. He also congratulated then on their commitment. “A philosopher once said ‘self confidence is born of demonstrated ability.’ When you earned your GED you demonstrated your ability.”

Student speaker Leia Lane worked full-time while attending GED classes. “I stand before you with joy in my heart. I’m starting at MWCC in the fall. I know I don’t have an easy road ahead.” Lane plans to earn a Business Administration degree. She closed by encouraging her fellow graduates to, “never give up.”
Lane was one of two graduates receiving the President’s Award. The award, founded by MWCC President Daniel M. Asquino, provides a voucher good for two MWCC courses as well as the books needed to take the class. Edwin Kosa, who had been away from the classroom for 25 years, also received the award. Kosa plans to work in a hospital or clinical setting working with alcoholics and addicts.

GED Director Dale Sanborn and Vice President of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development Jacqueline Feldman presided over the ceremony. “Dale has managed to keep this great program running smoothly,” said Feldman in closing remarks,” even as we have been moving sites and opening new sites. I’d like to thank her for all her hard work.” To the graduates, Feldman closed by saying, “I want to see all of you at my office Monday morning registering for classes. Your GED is proof that you can succeed in college courses.”
