MWCC HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL STUDENT
WOODWORKING DESIGN COMPETITION
Custom furniture, wood dishes and an instrument designed and constructed by teenagers were on display outside the auditorium in the Raymond M. LaFontaine Fine Arts Center this week during the second annual New England Student Woodworking Design Competition. Judges will choose the award winners at a ceremony tonight at 7.

Hosted by the Forest and Wood Products Institute at MWCC, the competition drew entries from students of Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fitchburg, Newmarket High School in Newmarket, N.H., Londonderry High School in Londonderry, N.H., Marlborough High School in Marlborough, Pinkerton Academy in Derry, N.H., Marshfield High School in Marshfield, U-32 High School in Montpelier, Vt. and Southeastern Regional Vocational High School in South Easton.
Van & Company of Pawtucket, R.I., made the engraved plaque presentation. The judges are David Sargent, owner of Sargent Wood Products, Michael Humphries, owner of Michael Humphries Woodworking, Joseph Malanson, production foreman at Woodmeister Corp., and Cap Corduan, department head of the Industrial Technical Theater Program Set Construction and Design at Fitchburg State College.
David Bazis, an instructor at U-32 High School, will give the keynote address, “The Value of a Quality Woodworking Education to the Wood Products Industry.”

AT MWCC HOLDS WRITE-ON! CELEBRATION

The College Access and Preparation Programs at MWCC held the annual Write-On! Celebration, a writing and art competition sponsored by Project GO and Project Excel, today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the college’s Gardner campus.
The annual Write-On! competition invites Project GO and Excel students to submit original short stories, poetry and artwork for judging first by staff at each middle school, then by MWCC faculty and staff. Prizes are awarded for winners, but all students receive a certificate for participating. The Write-On! Celebration honors all students who have submitted entries, and allows students to read and display their work to their peers and Project GO and Project Excel counselors. At the event, students will attend art and storytelling workshops and learn how to develop their creative talents.

of Samoset School won first prize for her poem and Alex Hartley of Gardner Middle School earned top prize in the art category.
Project GO (Greater Opportunities) is a federal TRIO program funded through the U.S. Department of Education and administered by MWCC. Project Excel is a Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Program funded by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.

• Theatre at the Mount will hold auditions for the Rodgers and Hart musical “Babes in Arms” on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7 at 7 p.m. sharp in room 182 at MWCC. Director/Music Director Jeff Williams and Choreographer Nicole Couture are looking for a large cast of teens and adults (ages 16 and up). Please prepare a short vocal selection (accompanist provided), expect to be taught a short dance combination and wear appropriate clothing and footwear (tap dancers should bring tap shoes.) Cold readings from the script may also be required. The tentative rehearsal schedule is Sundays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., beginning June 12. • As part of MWCC’s What’s Next Speaker Series, the college, the Twin Cities Latino Coalition and MWCC Entrepreneurial Resource Center will co-host a free lunchtime lecture by MIT economist Dr. C. Otto Scharmer at the Four Points by Sheraton in Leominster Friday, June 10 from noon to 2 p.m. Scharmer’s research on affecting change and innovation has been embraced by businesses and nonprofit organizations worldwide. Affiliated with MIT, the Helsinki School of Economics and Fujitsu Global Knowledge Institute in Tokyo, Scharmer has consulted with multinational firms and international institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia. He is a co-author of the book “Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the Future” and expands on his “presencing” theory in “Theory U: Leading from the Emerging Future.” The North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce and Community Builders, a partnership between MWCC and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, are co-sponsoring the lecture. • MWCC will hosts the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life from Friday, June 10 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, June 11 at 6 p.m. The 2004 Relay raised $758,000, the highest amount of the other 156 relays in New England. The Gardner Relay has raised over $5 million dollars since its inception 11 years ago. This year’s goal is to raise $800,000. Other benchmarks reached at the 2004 Relay include having 733 survivors walk the track, a number unheard of at any of the other relays, and being ranked No. 11 nationwide in funds raised (out of 4,200 relays). • “Between Two Worlds,” an art exhibit of recent oil paintings by Westminster artist Heidi D’Entremont, will run through Friday, July 1 in the East Wing Gallery of the Raymond M. Fontaine Fine Arts Center. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public. • Registrations are being excepted for MWCC’s summer programs for kids and teens, including basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, field hockey, tennis, fitness, “fun in the sun,” computers, science and math, “girl power,” and art.
