WRITING STANDARDS FOR COURSES IN ENGLISH 

In the evaluation of students' writing, the following elements are recognized as the basic criteria for evaluation:

  1.        An identifiable thesis or central idea;

2.        well developed and coherent paragraphs, indicating overall organization and leading in a clear direction;

3.        observance of major grammatical conventions;

4.        correctly constructed sentences, free of fragments;

5.        and appropriate diction.

SPECIFIC GRADE DESCRIPTIONS BASED ON ACQUIREMENT OF COURSE CONTENT AND QUALITY  OF WRITTEN EXPRESSION:

F

a failing grade: below standard and unacceptable.  Students who, at end of the semester still demonstrate critical difficulties in content and/or written expression would generally be considered failing students.

D

this grade indicates that the student is passing but doing poor work.  Serious difficulties in both content acquirement and/or written expression would constitute a D.

C

the average grade.  This student's writing would include all the major writing standards criteria , with only occasional deviations from major grammatical conventions and reflect a fair understanding of content.  Certain strengths may compensate for other weaknesses.

B

above average.  This student would demonstrate strong writing skills: no more than minimal structural and grammatical errors and demonstrated a deep understanding of course content.

A

outstanding achievement; a rare grade.  This student's writing would include all the above criteria and, in addition, would demonstrate originality of thought and sophistication of style.  The student would also demonstrate sophisticated understanding of course content.
