Circulation Services

Circulation Services to Students

Basic Borrowing Privileges:

Reserve Materials:

Some instructors place materials (books articles, videos, etc.) on reserve for their students. These materials are kept behind the Circulation Desk, and may be checked out to students with a valid library card. The checkout period for items on reserve is determined by the faculty member who assigns the readings. Reserve materials are shelved according to the instructor's last name, so students should be prepared to ask for materials by the name of the instructor.

Fines:

  • Once overdue, most materials accrue late fees of 5¢ per day, up to a maximum of $2.00 per item.
  • Special collections, including reserve materials, circulation desk items, and videos, accrue fines at a rate of 25¢ per day, up to a maximum of $2.00 per item.
  • Fines in excess of $10 will force a block on student records.
  • An overdue postcard will be mailed 2 weeks after an item is due, and a bill for the replacement cost of an item will be mailed 4 weeks after an item is due. Once a bill is generated, a student's record will be blocked.
  • Students will be responsible for the cost of replacement if an item is lost or damaged beyond repair.

Holds and Recalls:

MWCC Library honors the initial loan period of a checked out item. If a book is needed and has been checked out, a request may be made at the Circulation Desk that the book be placed on hold upon its return. Patrons may also place holds on available materials located at other libraries through the online library catalog. Please ask for more information at the Circulation Desk. Alternately, if an item that you have checked out is required by another patron, you may not renew the item, and a notice of recall shall be initiated.
If, after the patron who has the item checked out has been informed by telephone that a recall has been initiated (one day after the due date), fines will be accrued at a rate of $1.00 per day. Failure to return a recall item within 7 days of the due date will result in an immediate block on student records. Books needed for reserve take precedence over any other need and may be recalled at any time.

Laptops:

The library has available for loan to students a number of laptop computers, which may be used in the library for a period up to two hours. Access to the Internet is available through a wireless transmitter located in the library. Students must leave a driver's license at the Circulation Desk for the duration of the loan period. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.

End-of-Semester Due Dates:

All library materials must be returned to the library by the last scheduled day of classes. Students who do not return the items to the library, or do not make arrangements to extend the due date, will have their student records blocked. Once the items are returned, and the late fees resolved, the block will be lifted

ARC Cards:

The Academic and Research Collaborative (ARC) of the Central Massachusetts Regional Library System (CMRLS) is a coalition of academic, public, and special libraries working together to facilitate the sharing of resources and services for the benefit of their collective users. As members of this group, MWCC students, faculty, and staff are granted the privilege of borrowing from libraries within the collaborative. Every student, faculty member and staff member must have a current, valid ID from the home institution (MWCC), or a photo ID (a driver's license if possible), as well as an ARC card to borrow from participating libraries. Please ask at the Circulation Desk about borrowing from member libraries, which include Anna Maria College , Assumption College , Atlantic Union College , Becker College , Clark University , Holy Cross, Fitchburg State College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Nichols College , Quinsigamond Community College , Worcester State College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Circulation Services to Faculty & Staff

Basic Borrowing Privileges:

  • An MWCC Library card is required to check out materials. Please ask at the Circulation Desk if you do not have a card.
  • Items typically may be checked out for the duration of a semester, or for the winter or summer intersession.
  • Faculty and staff may have a maximum of 20 items checked out at one time.
  • Print journals do not typically leave the library, but please discuss the possibility of checking out a journal with the library staff.
Reserve Materials:

MWCC faculty members are invited to place materials for their classes on reserve in the library. These materials are kept behind the Circulation Desk, and may be checked out to students with a valid library card. Reserve materials may include books owned by the library, books owned by the instructor, previous exams, photocopies of journal articles, and other various media (for example, videotapes, software, etc.). All copied materials must adhere to copyright guidelines - see www.mwcc.mass.edu/library/copyright.html for specific copyright compliance. The checkout period for items on reserve is determined by the faculty member who assigns the readings. Reserve materials are shelved according to the instructor's last name, so students should be prepared to ask for materials by the name of the instructor

Fines:
  • Faculty and staff do not accrue fines on overdue materials that belong to MWCC Library . The library trusts that faculty and staff will be diligent in returning library materials in a timely fashion. Overdue items from other libraries, however, may accrue fines.
  • An overdue postcard will be mailed 2 weeks after an item is due, and a bill for the replacement cost of an item will be mailed 4 weeks after an item is due. Faculty and staff will be held responsible for the replacement fee of a lost or damaged item.

Since the loan period for faculty and staff is extended, an effort may be made by the library staff to shorten the loan period, if possible.
Books needed for reserve take precedence over any other need and may be recalled at any time.

Laptops:

The library has available for loan to faculty and staff a number of laptop computers, which may be checked out of the library for a period of three days, or longer if approved by the staff members' supervisor or faculty member's Division dean. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.
